Real history

The real history

Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City in 1858 to a wealthy family. As a boy he had severe asthma, and his father urged him to build up his body through hard exercise. He went to Harvard and won a seat in the New York State Assembly.

On Valentine's Day 1884, his mother and his wife, Alice, died on the same day. Leaving his baby daughter with his sister, he went west to the Dakota Territory and worked cattle on his Maltese Cross and Elkhorn ranches near Medora. He later said he would not have become president without those years. Seeing bison and other game wiped out and the land overgrazed shaped his ideas about conservation.

Back east, he served as a U.S. Civil Service Commissioner, New York City police commissioner and Assistant Secretary of the Navy. In 1898 he fought in Cuba as an officer of volunteer cavalry, then won election as governor of New York. In 1900 he was elected vice president under McKinley, and when an assassin shot McKinley and he died of his wounds, Roosevelt was sworn in on September 14, 1901.

As president he broke up J.P. Morgan's Northern Securities trust, settled the 1902 anthracite coal strike and backed rules to make food and drugs safer. He created the U.S. Forest Service and set aside 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves, 5 national parks and 18 national monuments, including the Grand Canyon. He oversaw the building of the Panama Canal and in 1906 visited the work, the first sitting president to travel abroad. That December he became the first American awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 1912 he ran again as the Progressive, or Bull Moose, candidate and lost. He died at his home, Sagamore Hill, on January 6, 1919.

Game lore (invented)

In the game's story

In the game's invented story, Roosevelt arrives in Dogear Crossing and within an hour has organized the town's first volunteer fire brigade, learned thirty-seven names and declared the whole situation "perfectly bully." He boxes, rows, hikes the Rimefold for fun and corrects the Archive's books on Marginalian elk. When he learns that the Blank Margin is eating the edge of the Deckle Wilds, he rides out to see it and starts lobbying the Folio Council to protect the western Wilds as a reserve.

In Lost Chapters' frame story, history's heroes fall into an invented world called Marginalia. That story is fiction; the history on this page is real.

How the card plays

Theodore Roosevelt costs 6 crystals and is a 5/5 Legendary Emerald Founder. His only ability is an aura: while he is on the field, your Adventurers get +1/+1. He is a Founder, not an Adventurer, so he doesn't boost himself.

Play him once two or three Adventurers are already out, so the aura pays off the moment he lands. In a deck led by Amelia Earhart, those Adventurers also have Explore, so the extra power goes onto attackers that are hard to block.

Corps of Discovery searches your deck for an Adventurer and helps build the field he wants. Sacagawea, River Guide gives your other Adventurers Explore under any Leader that uses Emerald. Mount Rushmore gives Founder and Leader characters +1/+1, which makes Roosevelt a 6/6.

  • Playable in decks led by Amelia Earhart, and by any Traveler Leader whose colors include Emerald.
  • In the Earhart starter deck (1 copy). Deck code: LC2-Ax8CIAEhASIBIwIkAiUBJgEnASgCKQEqAisBLAEtAS4BLwEwATEBMgEzATQBNQE2ATcBOAE5AToBOwE8AT0BZQJ0Anuc
  • A deck holds up to 3 copies of this card.
