Cobalt Cards: Thinkers and Dreamers

Cobalt is the color of Thinkers and Dreamers: writers, poets, reformers and the people who imagined a better country. Its cards include Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Frost and Neil Armstrong. Cobalt has two Leaders: Martin Luther King Jr. and Neil Armstrong.

How Cobalt plays

Cobalt is the card-advantage color. Many of its characters draw a card when they arrive or when they are destroyed, so trading with a Cobalt deck rarely leaves it short of options. Harriet Beecher Stowe draws on play for a single crystal, William Faulkner draws when he falls, and Nathaniel Hawthorne draws whenever he survives damage. Locations such as NASA and Writers Convention keep the cards coming every turn.

Cobalt also plays defense well. Rosa Parks has Protest, Guard and Resolve; Dr. King's Leader ability gives every character Resolve, so survivors grow stronger; and Counters like Alexander and the Virginians give your whole field +1/+1 in the middle of a fight.

The Thinkers archetype

The Collection groups Cobalt's plan under Thinkers: cards with the Thinker or Writer subtype and cards that care about them. Frederick Douglass gives your Thinkers +1/+1, and Writers Convention gives them +2/+2 and draws a card at the end of each turn while you control one.

Two Leaders, two plans

Dr. King builds a wide, sturdy field and draws extra cards once four or more characters are in play. Neil Armstrong plays a different game: his Leader has Explore and draws a card whenever it hits the enemy Leader, so his deck leans on the Leader as its main attacker.

Weak spots

Many Cobalt characters are small for their cost, because part of their value is the card they draw. Fast decks with Explore can race past Cobalt's blockers before the extra cards matter.
