Davy Crockett: Emerald Character

Davy Crockett (1786 to 1836) was a Tennessee frontiersman, militia soldier and congressman who died at the Battle of the Alamo in Texas on March 6, 1836. He was already a legend in his own lifetime, and comic almanacs published under his name added many tall tales that never happened.

Real history

The real history

David Crockett was born on August 17, 1786, in eastern Tennessee, into a poor family that moved often. He became a skilled hunter and fought in the Creek War in 1813 and 1814 under Andrew Jackson, which included the victory at Horseshoe Bend. He then served in the Tennessee legislature, beginning in 1821, and went to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1827.

In Congress he argued for poor farmers and settlers and broke with President Jackson over several issues. He opposed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which forced Native nations such as the Cherokee from their homelands, and the Cherokee leader John Ross thanked him for it. Crockett lost his seat in 1831, won it back in 1833, and lost again in 1835 by 252 votes.

His fame grew while he was alive. A play, The Lion of the West, came out in 1831, and in 1834 he published his own life story. Starting in 1835, comic almanacs appeared under his name with wild tall tales about a legendary "Davy." Crockett did not write those stories, and the mix of the real man and the myth has never been fully untangled.

Crockett left for Texas in November 1835 and reached San Antonio in early February 1836. He was among the defenders of the Alamo mission during the siege from February 23 to March 6, and every defender was killed. Accounts conflict on whether he died fighting or was executed after being captured.

Game lore (invented)

In the game's story

In the game's invented story, Davy Crockett turns up in the Deckle Wilds with a long rifle, a coonskin cap and a tale ready before anyone asks, and the taproom of the Folded Corner is soon taking bets on which of his stories are true. Underneath the boasting he has a quiet streak, and the Wildkin come around to him when Sacagawea tells them he voted against the law that drove the Cherokee from their homes. He comes back from one deep trip into the Wilds with torn clothes and a black eye, saying he wrestled something in there and won't say what.

In Lost Chapters' frame story, history's heroes fall into an invented world called Marginalia. That story is fiction; the history on this page is real.
