Real history

The real history

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York. He was taught at home by tutors until he was 14, then attended the Groton School and Harvard College. He married Eleanor Roosevelt in 1905, and they had six children, five of whom lived to adulthood.

He won election to the New York State Senate in 1910. President Woodrow Wilson appointed him Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1913, and he held the job until 1920, when he ran for vice president with James Cox and lost.

In the summer of 1921, Roosevelt contracted polio and lost the use of his legs. He used braces and a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He helped create a foundation at Warm Springs, Georgia, to help other polio patients, and he supported the March of Dimes, which funded work toward a polio vaccine. He was elected governor of New York in 1928.

Roosevelt won the presidency in 1932, in the middle of the Great Depression. His New Deal programs included the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, he led the nation through World War II as commander in chief. He won reelection three times and remains the only president to serve more than two terms. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945, at Warm Springs, Georgia, just before the war in Europe ended.
