The real history
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917, in Brookline, Massachusetts, the first president born in the 20th century. As a Harvard student he wrote a senior essay on Britain's lack of military preparation that was published as the bestselling book Why England Slept.
In World War II he commanded a PT boat in the Pacific. In August 1943 a Japanese destroyer sank his boat, PT-109, and Kennedy led the survivors to safety, towing an injured crewmate. He received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and the Purple Heart.
He won a seat in Congress in 1946, served three terms in the House, and was elected to the Senate in 1952. He married Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953, and his book Profiles in Courage won the Pulitzer Prize in 1957. In 1960 he defeated Richard Nixon to become, at age 43, the youngest man elected president.
As president he created the Peace Corps, and in 1962 he led the United States through the Cuban Missile Crisis, which ended when the Soviets agreed to remove their nuclear missiles from Cuba. On May 25, 1961, he asked Congress to commit to landing an American on the Moon, and on September 12, 1962, he repeated the goal in a speech to about 40,000 people at Rice University in Houston. Apollo 11 achieved it in July 1969. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas.

In the game's story
In the game's invented story, Kennedy arrives in Marginalia and meets Neil Armstrong in the Archive's observatory, where he asks one question, what it was like, and then listens for three hours. He sets his sights on the high rift in the sky that Armstrong discovered, and a speech to the Folio Council about choosing hard goals wins funding for an expedition, something the Bridgecrew has never voted for before. On weekends he sails a small borrowed boat on the Inkwash.
