Real history

The real history

Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867, near Millville, Indiana, the third of seven children of Milton and Susan Wright. His father was a minister, so the family moved often. Wilbur was gifted at math and science, but he never finished formal high school. A hockey injury in the winter of 1885 to 1886 kept him close to home for about three years, and he spent that time caring for his ill mother and studying widely.

In 1889 he and his brother Orville started a printing business, and in the early 1890s they moved into the bicycle trade in Dayton, Ohio, which paid for their airplane work. Their father had given them a toy helicopter in 1878, and the death of the glider pioneer Otto Lilienthal in 1896 revived their interest in flight. They ran wind tunnel tests in Dayton and flew gliders at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

On December 17, 1903, Wilbur piloted the longest of the day's four flights, 852 feet in 59 seconds. In the spring of 1908 he traveled to Europe to demonstrate the airplane while Orville tested it for the U.S. Army at home. His flights drew crowds and attention from royalty and high society.

The Wright Company was formed in 1909 with Wilbur as its president. He fell ill with typhoid fever and died in Dayton on May 30, 1912, at age 45. His father wrote that it had been a short life, full of consequences.

Game lore (invented)

In the game's story

In the game's invented story, Wilbur arrives in Marginalia two weeks after Orville, through a shard that falls into the brothers' Dayton bicycle shop. He finds Orville within a day, covered in goblin grease and arguing happily about propellers. Wilbur becomes the planner and talker of the pair, the one who writes the letters, gives the lectures and bargains with the Bridgecrew for canvas, and the card game remembers that each brother is at his best when the other is on the field.

In Lost Chapters' frame story, history's heroes fall into an invented world called Marginalia. That story is fiction; the history on this page is real.

How the card plays

Wilbur Wright, Brother costs 4 crystals and is a 3/4 Gold Adventurer. He gets +0/+1 for each Pilot you control. On play, if you control Orville, Build 2 Tinker Tokens.

The best turn for Wilbur is one where Orville is already on your field, because two Tinker Tokens for 4 crystals is a lot of board. That makes the order matter: play Orville Wright, Brother, Orville Wright, first and Wilbur afterward. Without Orville he is still a sturdy 3/4, and each Pilot raises his health, so Amelia Earhart, Vehicle Junkie, Amelia Earhart, turns him into a 3/5. Wilbur is also an Adventurer, the exact type Orville counts for extra power. The Wright Brothers, The Wright Brothers, draws 2 cards if you control a Pilot or Inventor, and Orville is an Inventor, so the pair also set up that draw.
