Real history

The real history

Orville Wright was born on August 19, 1871, in Dayton, Ohio, the younger of the two brothers. As young men he and Wilbur ran a printing shop that produced local newspapers. In the spring of 1893 they opened a bicycle repair and sales shop, which became their main business and the place where they carried out their early research on how wings work.

After testing gliders on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the brothers returned to Kitty Hawk with a powered machine. On December 17, 1903, Orville piloted the machine and made the first flight, which stayed in the air for 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. The brothers took turns and made four flights that day. Wilbur's last one was the longest, lasting 59 seconds.

In 1908 Wilbur demonstrated their airplane in Europe while Orville ran trials for the U.S. Army at Fort Myer, Virginia. During one flight the aircraft crashed, killing his passenger, Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge. Orville broke his thigh and pelvis and felt pain from the injuries for the rest of his life.

After Wilbur died of typhoid fever in 1912, Orville became president of the Wright Company. He sold his interest in it in 1915 but stayed on as a consulting engineer. He lived at Hawthorn Hill in Oakwood, Ohio, and served on aviation commissions, including one that was a forerunner of NASA. Orville never married. He died in Dayton on January 30, 1948.

Game lore (invented)

In the game's story

In the game's invented story, Orville falls into Marginalia after finding a glinting shard in the sand at Kitty Hawk, where unseen watchers had stood a few days earlier. He is quieter and shyer than his brother, fierce in the workshop, and he becomes fast friends with Amelia Earhart. He helps the goblins build gliders for the Dogear Crossing Flying School, and he insists that he never flew alone: it was always both brothers.

In Lost Chapters' frame story, history's heroes fall into an invented world called Marginalia. That story is fiction; the history on this page is real.

How the card plays

Orville Wright, Brother costs 7 crystals and is a 5/6 Gold Inventor. He gets +1/+0 for each Pilot and Adventurer you control, and he has Explore while you control Wilbur.

He is expensive, so he works best as the payoff for a board you have already built. Count your Pilots and Adventurers before you commit: with three of them on the field he attacks as an 8/6. Wilbur Wright, Brother, Wilbur Wright, is the natural partner, because Wilbur is an Adventurer who adds to Orville's power and also switches on his Explore. Amelia Earhart, Vehicle Junkie, Amelia Earhart, is a Pilot that fetches a Vehicle, and Lincoln Ellsworth, Lincoln Ellsworth, is a one-crystal Adventurer that fills out the count cheaply. Play the small bodies first and Orville last, so he arrives already large.
