Real history

The real history

Apollo 11 lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 16, 1969, at 9:32 a.m. Eastern time. A Saturn V rocket, launched from Pad 39A, carried three astronauts: Neil Armstrong, the commander, Buzz Aldrin, the lunar module pilot, and Michael Collins, the command module pilot.

On July 20, the lunar module landed in the Sea of Tranquility at 4:17 p.m. Eastern time. Armstrong flew the final approach by hand to steer past a rocky crater, and the craft touched down with very little fuel left. He radioed that Tranquility Base was on the ground and that the Eagle, the lunar module, had landed.

At 10:56 p.m. Eastern time Armstrong stepped onto the surface, about 109 hours and 42 minutes after launch. Aldrin followed roughly twenty minutes later. The two men spent about two and a half hours outside, collecting lunar samples and taking photographs. In all, they stayed on the Moon for 21 hours and 36 minutes before lifting off to rejoin Collins.

The crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24, 1969, about 13 miles from the recovery ship USS Hornet. Over the next three and a half years, ten more astronauts walked on the Moon during later Apollo missions.
