Real history

The real history

Chips was a German shepherd and husky mix who lived with a family in Pleasantville, New York. In 1942 they donated him to the U.S. Army, which trained dogs to serve as sentries and scouts. He was paired with a soldier named Private Rowell and served with an Army infantry unit.

Chips served as a sentry at the Casablanca Conference in 1943, where he met Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. On July 10, 1943, Chips and his platoon came ashore during the Allied invasion of Sicily and came under fire from a hidden machine-gun position. Chips broke free from his handler and ran at the position. He grabbed the gun and pulled it off its mount, and the enemy soldiers inside surrendered. Chips had a scalp wound and powder burns, but he survived.

His deed brought him medal recommendations, including a Silver Star and Purple Heart, but Army policy did not allow official honors for animals, and the awards were revoked or never made official. His unit still unofficially gave him a theater ribbon with an arrowhead and eight battle stars.

After the war, Chips went home to his family in New York. In January 2018, 75 years after the Casablanca Conference, the UK charity PDSA awarded him the Dickin Medal, its honor for animal bravery, at the Churchill War Rooms in London. It was the first Dickin Medal for a U.S. Army animal since 1946.

Game lore (invented)

In the game's story

In the game's invented story, Chips is a large, shaggy, friendly dog with one torn ear who arrives in Marginalia from Sicily in 1943, still limping from his wounds. He goes around the hospital ward of the Order of the Lamp, leaning against every patient until they smile, and he has been the hospital's dog ever since. He also fights in the Echo battles, and the Echoes seem unable to copy him.

In Lost Chapters' frame story, history's heroes fall into an invented world called Marginalia. That story is fiction; the history on this page is real.

Questions about Chips

Did Chips really get a Purple Heart?

Sources differ. He was recommended for the Silver Star and Purple Heart in 1943, but Army policy did not allow animals to receive them, so the awards were revoked or never made official. In 2018 the UK charity PDSA gave him the Dickin Medal instead.
