The real history
St. Augustine was founded on September 8, 1565, by the Spanish commander Pedro Menendez de Aviles. He sailed from Spain with about 10 ships and 1,000 men, with the goal of removing French settlers from Florida and setting up a Spanish colony. The French had built Fort Caroline near the mouth of the St. Johns River. Menendez founded San Agustin about 40 miles to the south, and he also captured Fort Caroline, renaming it San Mateo. St. Augustine became the first permanent European settlement in what is now the United States, decades before Jamestown in 1607.
The town became the center of Spanish Florida and needed strong defenses. Its stone fort, the Castillo de San Marcos, held out against English attacks in 1702 and again in 1740.
Control of the town changed several times. Britain gained Florida by treaty in 1763 and made St. Augustine the capital of East Florida. After American independence Spain took it back, and Spain formally gave Florida to the United States in 1821 under the Adams-Onis Treaty.
