Decisive battlefield victory that combined French naval power, American determination, and one very surprised British general.
The real history
Yorktown was founded in 1691 under the Act for Ports, passed by Virginia's General Assembly to regulate trade and collect taxes. Fifty acres on the York River were bought from Benjamin Read for 10,000 pounds of tobacco and cask. The town became a busy tobacco port, shipping crops from nearby plantations and receiving goods such as clothing, wine, furniture and silver. At its peak, between 1740 and 1770, it had several hundred buildings and almost 2,000 residents, rivaling nearby Williamsburg. Its people included merchants, planters, shopkeepers, servants and enslaved people.
In 1781 British General Lord Cornwallis made Yorktown a base. American and French forces under George Washington besieged the town for several weeks, and the fighting caused heavy damage. On the afternoon of October 18, officers met to settle the terms at the Moore House, which belonged to the merchant and planter Augustine Moore. The location was outside the line of fire and had not been damaged. On October 19, 1781, Cornwallis surrendered about 8,300 British, German and Loyalist troops, ending the final major battle of the American Revolution.
Yorktown never recovered its old importance. By 1790 only 661 people lived there, in fewer than 70 buildings. A fire in 1814 and the Civil War siege of 1862 brought more damage. Today the town and battlefield are part of Colonial National Historical Park, which also includes Historic Jamestowne and the 23-mile Colonial Parkway.
