The real history
The Army named its new main battle tank the M1 Abrams in 1980 to honor General Creighton W. Abrams. In World War II he was a tank commander who pioneered aggressive tank tactics and the close teamwork of different kinds of units. The new tank entered Army service that year and replaced the older M60.
The M1 was a third-generation main battle tank, built for fast, hard-hitting armored warfare. It had composite armor and a 105mm cannon, and it was powered by a gas turbine engine, the Honeywell AGT1500. The Army describes it as highly mobile for its size. It weighs nearly 68 short tons, which makes it one of the heaviest tanks in service.
Production of the first version ran from 1979 to 1985, with 3,273 built. The upgraded M1A1 followed from 1986 to 1992, with about 6,000 built, and the tank's cannon was later upgraded to a 120mm smoothbore. The Abrams had not fought in a war until the Gulf War of 1991, when M1A1 tanks proved very effective in Operation Desert Storm, destroying enemy forces from long range.
Its design is modular, which lets the Army add improvements over decades. Newer versions such as the M1A2 SEPv3 add digital systems, sensor-linked targeting and active protection systems. Allies such as Poland, Egypt and Australia also use the Abrams. Its engine overhauls have been done at Anniston Army Depot in Alabama since 1980.
