Real history

The real history

The Queen Anne's Revenge began life as La Concorde, a French ship used in the transatlantic slave trade. On November 28, 1717, pirates led by Blackbeard captured it near the island of Martinique while it was carrying enslaved Africans. Blackbeard made it his flagship and renamed it.

In 1718 his fleet was the flagship plus three sloops. The ship was Blackbeard's flagship for just a little over six months. In June 1718 it ran aground on a sandbar in the shoals outside Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina, and was abandoned. The sloop Adventure ran aground nearby soon afterward.

The wreck was found on November 21, 1996, by Intersal, Inc., a private research firm working under a permit from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. They saw a cluster of cannon and anchors on the seafloor. Other early finds, including a bronze bell dated 1705 and an English blunderbuss barrel, helped confirm the ship, along with the location and the size and nature of the debris.

North Carolina made the site a protected archaeological site in 1997, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Archaeologists from the state's Underwater Archaeology Branch have worked there ever since, and more than 400,000 objects have been raised, including cannonballs, hull pieces, tools and glass trade beads.

Many are cleaned and conserved at the Queen Anne's Revenge Conservation Lab in Greenville, which opened in 2004 as a partnership between the state and East Carolina University. Much of the work is freeing objects from concretions, hard clumps of sand and sea life that form around metal in salt water.

Game lore (invented)

In the game's story

In the game's invented story, the Queen Anne's Revenge sails out of a rift in the fog into Errata Harbor, smoking, with Blackbeard on the quarterdeck. After that, the harbor becomes a pirate town again, with crews arriving from every decade of the Golden Age of Piracy. The local Bridgecrew adopt Blackbeard as an unofficial patron saint, and the Queen's Guardsmen double their harbor patrols.

In Lost Chapters' frame story, history's heroes fall into an invented world called Marginalia. That story is fiction; the history on this page is real.

How the card plays

The Queen Anne's Revenge costs 5 crystals and is an Un-common Garnet Item (Vehicle). Its card text is Equip: +3/+2 and Explore. The equipped character gets +3/+2 and can only be blocked by characters that also have Explore. If you control Blackbeard (Leader or character), your opponent also discards a random card.

The discard is the reason to play it in a Blackbeard deck: you get a big attacker and take a card from your rival at the same time. Edward Teach "Blackbeard" Edward Teach "Blackbeard" has Double Chapter and makes your opponent discard when he charges, so he is the natural captain of this ship. Bartholomew Roberts Bartholomew Roberts makes your rival discard when he is played after a charge. Cornelius Vanderbilt Cornelius Vanderbilt makes your Vehicles cost 1 less.
